Barry Stoneham
Barry Stoneham (born 9 February 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club between 1986 and 2000.
Originally from St Joseph's Football Club Geelong, Stoneham appeared 241 times for Geelong in the AFL and kicked 223 goals. Injury curtailed his career at points, most of all a sickening broken leg that sidelined him for the 1994 finals series and the entire 1995 season. He played at both centre half back and centre half forward and played for Geelong in two losing Grand Finals in 1989 and 1992. Barry's broken leg was the biggest upset of his career and many say that he would have been a extraordinary player if the injury didn't affect his career. When Stoneham returned he lost a lot of his athleticism and never came back as strong. Stoneham developed into one of the top flight centre half forwards in the game. He was a strong overhead mark and reliable kick on both sides of his body, He knew how to play his position and was considered by many as the hardest on the field. In 1989 Stoneham represented Victoria in Perth against W.A and played at the M.C.G against S.A. Stoneham had a great future ahead of him in the AFL. 9693rd player to appear, 250th most games played, 310th most goals kicked Geelong: 860th player to appear, 20th most games played, 29th most goals kicked As a junior, Stoneham played for St Joseph's Football Club (GFL) from under 9's to seniors. Stoneham also played for St Joseph's College Geelong football team and was recruited to Geelong Football Club in 1985 at the age of 18. Stoneham grew up in Geelong and played for Geelong senior side for all of his career. Stoneham represented Victoria on several occasions as a junior and represented Geelong in the under 18 "School Boys Team", This team was considered as a junior AFL team. Stoneham played in many E.J Whitten Legends matches and he also played in the Chris Mainwaring Legends match as the captain in 2012. The whole idea of the Chris Mainwaring Legends match is to have a match between the 1992 Geelong and West Coast Sides as a Grand Final rematch.
